A container traffic eco-truck trial aiming at a significant reduction of carbon dioxide emissions will be launched in Finland in November. On 19 November 2013, Trafi, the Finnish Transport Safety Agency, granted a five-year trial permit for one large-capacity modular combination vehicle to Speed Oy. The first route will be Vuosaari harbour–Lahti–Vuosaari harbour.

The eco-truck trial is a new operations model whose objective is the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions by up to 40 percent compared to traditional modes of transport. The objective is considered realistic because the eco-truck combination can be divided into two regular trailer combination in an inland terminal.

"This will significantly reduce the number of unnecessary empty container transports. At the same time the environmental load decreases and transport efficiency increases which in turn will improve business competitiveness," says Jukka Rantanen, project coordinator and the CEO of Lahti Region Development LADEC Ltd.

The aim of this trial is to use the information system in the vehicle to generate detailed information on fuel economy, emission levels and the fleet’s ability to use biofuel.

The maximum total mass of the eco-truck is 80 metric tonnes and length 33.5 meters. The axle loads, steerability and height do not differ from regular combinations so changes in roads, interchanges, underpasses or bridges are not required.

A similar combination has been tested in Sweden and the results were promising. According to the report 1/2013 by Nordisk Vägforum, the eco-truck has been a success from the viewpoint of traffic safety and it has significantly reduced environmental impact per tonne-kilometer transported.

The eco-truck trial is linked to international research and development and it has been under development in Finland for nearly four years. The team consists of sea freight container transport expert Speed Oy, heavy vehicle and diesel engine manufacturer Volvo Finland Ab, trailer manufacturer Närko Oy and fuel producer Neste Oil Oyj.

The project is coordinated by Lahden Seudun Kehitys LADEC Oy, leader of the Finnish environmental technology cluster.
